Eastside Eye Associates was started in 1975 by Dr. Julius Shulman. Since then we have evolved into a multispecialty ophthalmology practice with specialists in laser vision correction, cataract surgery, glaucoma, retinal diseases, ophthalmic plastic surgery, contact lenses, general eye care and eyeglass dispensing. Dr. Dalia Nagel recently joined our staff, expanding our services and hours of operation. Custom Cataract Surgery
Modern cataract surgery in the average patient now takes about 20 minutes or less, with the patient resuming normal activity shortly after surgery. The incision to remove the cataract is so small that stitches are usually unnecessary and healing is largely completed in a week or two. With the advent of microsurgery and the intraocular lens implant , cataracts no longer have to "ripen" and can be removed at any stage.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, which becomes damaged from a build up of fluid and pressure inside the eye. Although the earliest sign of glaucoma is usually elevated intraocular pressure, many patients do not demonstrate this elevation but sustain optic nerve damage from what is considered a normal pressure. Detection of this and other types of glaucoma rely on detecting a change in the shape of the optic nerve and a loss of parts of your field of vision.
Retina
In the center of the retina, similar to the central bulls-eye of a target, is the macula, the most sensitive part of the retina and the part that gives precise vision for reading and driving. Some common disorders of the retina include macular degeneration, "floaters" and retinal detachment. Many patients with macular degeneration can now be treated with vitamins and medication to avert severe vision loss.
Although cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with a clear lens made from plastic, the thin, cellophane-like membrane or capsule that surrounds the lens is purposefully left behind. More specifically, the back part or posterior part of the capsule is left, while the front or anterior part is opened to allow the cloudy lens inside to be removed. This posterior part of the capsule acts as a barrier between the back and front compartments of the eye and helps the intraocular lens settle in place.
However, in about 10-15% of patients the normally clear posterior capsule becomes cloudy or wrinkled over time, blurring vision as if the cataract were growing back. Vision is restored with a quick and painless in-office Yag laser treatment that makes an opening in the cloudy posterior capsule, allowing for the clear passage of light through the pupil into the eye. Barring any rare complications such as swelling or detachment of the retina, vision is restored in a matter of hours.
