Eastside Eye Associates was started in 1975 by Dr. Julius Shulman. Since then we have evolved into a multispecialty ophthalmology practice with specialists in laser vision correction, cataract surgery, glaucoma, retinal diseases, ophthalmic plastic surgery, contact lenses, general eye care and eyeglass dispensing. Dr. Dalia Nagel recently joined our staff, expanding our services and hours of operation. We take great pride in offering the most technologically advanced developments in ophthalmology, along with individualized and personal attention to our patients.
Dr. Julius Shulman is a board certified highly skilled LASIK surgeon using state of the art equipment including the Intralase bladefree laser, the VISX S4 excimer laser with advanced eye-tracking capabilities and CustomVue wavefront technology with Iris registration. If you are seeking LASIK in NYC please call us for a complimentary screening. The safety of all-laser LASIK using blade-free Intralase and a customized laser profile is unprecedented. All-laser LASIK is now approved by NASA and the United States Air Force.
Modern cataract surgery in the average patient now takes about 20 minutes or less, with the patient resuming normal activity shortly after surgery. The incision to remove the cataract is so small that stitches are usually unnecessary and healing is largely completed in a week or two. With the advent of microsurgery and the intraocular lens implant , cataracts no longer have to "ripen" and can be removed at any stage.
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, which becomes damaged from a build up of fluid and pressure inside the eye. Although the earliest sign of glaucoma is usually elevated intraocular pressure, many patients do not demonstrate this elevation but sustain optic nerve damage from what is considered a normal pressure. Detection of this and other types of glaucoma rely on detecting a change in the shape of the optic nerve and a loss of parts of your field of vision.
In the center of the retina, similar to the central bulls-eye of a target, is the macula, the most sensitive part of the retina and the part that gives precise vision for reading and driving. Some common disorders of the retina include macular degeneration, "floaters" and retinal detachment. Many patients with macular degeneration can now be treated with vitamins and medication to avert severe vision loss.
We are proud to offer the Intralase Method. "More patients in clinical trials achieved vision that was 20/20 or better when their LASIK procedre was performed with IntraLase." If you are seeking the safest possible method for laser vision correction you should consider this method for more safety and better predictability.
The WaveScan WaveFront System is an ophthalmic diagnostic instrument that measures the refractive error and wavefront aberrations of the human eye. The measurements can be used to determine refractive errors and irregularities that cause decreased or blurry vision. The WaveScan software uses the information to create a custom tailored correction map for the unique characteristics of each individual eye.
WaveScan-based digital technology identifies and measures imperfections in your eyes 25 times more precisely than standard refraction methods. The WaveScan software translates the information into a set of CustomVue treatment instructions and transfers this information to the Visx S4 excimer laser driving a new level of precision and accuracy.
Eastside Eye Associates takes great pride in offering the most technologically advanced developments in ophthalmology. We have recently acquired the most sophisticated OCT, or optical coherence tomography, which is a new, noninvasive, imaging device that allows us to analyze the optic nerve and retinal structures with <10 micron resolution. The Cirrus OCT™ is non-contact and provides cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve using optical backscattering of light similar to ultrasonography. These images allow us to better diagnose and follow patients with eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, central serous retinopathy and macular edema. In addition, it can detect thinning of the nerve fiber layer, an early sign of glaucoma.
Premium Lens Technology
You can NOW enjoy the benefits of improving both near vision and far vision after cataract surgery! We offer our patients options for multifocal and toric lens implants after cataract surgery to reduce dependence on glasses.
SLT - Treatment for Glaucoma
Eastside Eye Associates was among the first sites in Manhattan to perform an innovative laser treatment using SLT (selective laser trabeculoplasty) to reduce intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. SLT has been proven effective and durable in clinical studies. Thousands of SLT treatments have been successfully performed and it provides a safe alternative to daily eye drop medications, which can be costly and can be associated with unwanted side-effects. SLT is effective as a first line therapy, replacement therapy or supplemental therapy, and we are happy to offer this breakthrough treatment as an option for our glaucoma patients.
