Custom Cataract Surgery

Custom Cataract Surgery Modern cataract surgery in the average patient now takes about 20 minutes or less, with the patient resuming normal activity shortly after surgery. The incision to remove the cataract is so small that stitches are usually unnecessary and healing is largely completed in a week or two. With the advent of microsurgery and the intraocular lens implant , cataracts no longer have to "ripen" and can be removed at any stage.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, which becomes damaged from a build up of fluid and pressure inside the eye. Although the earliest sign of glaucoma is usually elevated intraocular pressure, many patients do not demonstrate this elevation but sustain optic nerve damage from what is considered a normal pressure. Detection of this and other types of glaucoma rely on detecting a change in the shape of the optic nerve and a loss of parts of your field of vision.

Retina

Retina In the center of the retina, similar to the central bulls-eye of a target, is the macula, the most sensitive part of the retina and the part that gives precise vision for reading and driving. Some common disorders of the retina include macular degeneration, "floaters" and retinal detachment. Many patients with macular degeneration can now be treated with vitamins and medication to avert severe vision loss.

Glaucoma Treatment

GlaucomaOver five million people in the United States suffer from glaucoma, one of the leading cause of blindness in this country. In most cases, loss of sight from glaucoma is preventable, making early detection and treatment so important.

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, which becomes damaged from a build up of fluid and pressure inside the eye.

Our office uses a special digital camera to document and follow changes in optic nerve shape, and two computerized analyzers to detect the earliest sign of visual field loss. Although eye drops to lower intraocular pressure are usually sufficient to control glaucoma and prevent vision loss, laser treatment is sometimes needed if eye drops are not effective. With two different lasers to treat glaucoma, and a variety of eye drops to lower intraocular pressure, it is the rare patient who requires eye surgery for glaucoma.

New Advancements in Treating Glaucoma

Eastside Eye Associates was among the first sites in Manhattan to perform an innovative laser treatment using SLT (selective laser trabeculoplasty) to reduce intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. SLT has been proven effective and durable in clinical studies. Thousands of SLT treatments have been successfully performed and it provides a safe alternative to daily eye drop medications, which can be costly and can be associated with unwanted side-effects. SLT is effective as a first line therapy, replacement therapy or supplemental therapy, and we are happy to offer this breakthrough treatment as an option for our glaucoma patients.

We advise a yearly check up for most patients over age 50, or for younger patients with a strong family history of glaucoma. African Americans and Hispanic Americans have a four-fold increased risk of developing glaucoma and should be checked yearly after age 35.
