As you may know from the media, there has been a worldwide increase of serious eye infections in contact lens wearers. The best way to minimize the chances of a serious eye infection is to switch, whenever possible, to a daily disposable contact lens. Putting on a clean, fresh lens every morning is the most hygienic way to wear soft contact lenses. Although this system is more expensive than a two week or monthly change of lenses, you do not need to purchase cleaning and disinfecting supplies, so the expense may be less than you think. If your prescription does not lend itself to daily disposable lenses, a two week lens would be preferable to a monthly or non-disposable lens. Sleeping in a lens is no longer recommended, except in rare cases. Many patients have used Renu® to disinfect their lenses. Although Renu® has been safely used by millions of contact lens wearers, we are advising our patients who use Renu® to switch to Optifree® or Complete® until this matter is resolved.
